Constipation
Constipation is a common feature with progressive illnesses. It can happen as a side effect of illnesses such as cancer, Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis.
Constipation can also happen as a result of anxiety or depression. Your brain and gut are linked by nerves. Sometimes, when people are depressed or anxious, these nerves may not act normally and this can cause constipation.
It can also be caused by some of the medicines used to treat illnesses.
Ways to overcome constipation
Make sure you have enough fibre in your diet and that you are drinking enough water. If you are worried about constipation, ask a member of staff at the Hospice about things that can help.
