Kate – Retail volunteer

Kate Child, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday, has dedicated her time to the Hospice for nine and a half years, as a retail volunteer in our Newmarket shop.

Having celebrated her birthday on the Friday, Kate reported as usual the following day for her regular Saturday morning shift.

She explains: “I had a friend who was a volunteer and she told me that there was a shortfall, particularly on a Saturday in the shop, and would I like to come in and help out. I said yes and then after that, well, I suppose you could say I became hooked.

“I really enjoy it. It is very social and you get to meet a lot of new people. I also really like to get to know the customers and there is a great team in the shop too.

“The role is very varied, there’s always something to do. I spend quite a bit of time on the till which I enjoy because I get to speak to our customers a lot, but there are plenty of other things to do as well.”
