"Not a good swimmer at all but I found I loved being in the lake!"

Martin Rands took part in the Henley Swim Festival 2023, along with his daughter Molly, in support of the Hospice after his wife, Sarah, was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer the year before. Together they raised more than £2,000.

“I started swimming in the lake two years ago; prior to that, not a good swimmer at all but I found I loved being in the lake!… The Hospice team have been incredible with pain relief, counselling and support. Without their help, things would have been and still would be much harder for us all. This is just a small something I can do to try and say thank you to the whole team at St Nicholas and hopefully give a little back.”

"I started doing annual virtual challenges in 2021."

Allison Humphreys is a long-term supporter of St Nic’s, and this year (2024), Allison aims to complete the Best of British virtual challenge, which covers 750 miles.

“I’m 51 and have MS (Multiple Sclerosis). I’ve supported the Hospice for years and started doing annual virtual challenges in 2021 with the virtual Lands End to John O’Groats. My best friend’s mum had her last days in the Hospice. Having MS means one day I may need their help too.”

"This is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the excellent service they provide."

Steve Lamb, with a bunch of dedicated friends, took on the National Three Peaks Challenge and raised £2,000.

“Nine years ago, my brother-in-law and one of my best friends, Giles Wigg, was cared for in the last months of his life by their amazing team. They also cared for the extended family, and this has been ongoing since. As hospices are not funded by the government and therefore rely on charitable donations, I feel that this is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the excellent service they provide and raise some money for them to enable them to care for others as they did for Giles.”
