The Tom Youngs Foundation donates £15,000 to us

St Nicholas Hospice Care has received a wonderful £15,000 donation from The Tom Youngs Foundation, helping ensure local people facing dying, death and grief continue to receive the care and support they need.

The donation has been made in memory of former Cambridge United footballer Tom Youngs, who was cared for by St Nicholas Hospice Care before his death from bowel cancer that had metastasised in his liver in May 2025, aged 45.

Tom spent the final days of his life at the hospice, having previously become an advocate for people living with MS following his diagnosis in 2014.

The Tom Youngs Foundation was established to celebrate Tom’s life and legacy, supports people affected by bowel and liver cancer and multiple sclerosis, while also helping young people pursue their potential in sport and music.

The £15,000 donation has been made possible through a series of fundraising activities organised by The Tom Youngs Foundation and its supporters, including a memorial walk in April which saw 45 people complete more than 26 miles from Mildenhall Town FC to Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium.

St Nicholas Hospice Care has been named as one of the principal beneficiaries of the charity, reflecting the support Tom and his family received.

Michelle Youngs, the co-founder of The Thomas Youngs Foundation and Tom’s wife, said: “We are really proud to be able to donate a larger than expected sum of money to St Nic’s.

“We couldn’t have done it without all the people who have walked, golfed, baked and donated in Tom’s honour and all of that generosity has made it possible for us to support the hospice in this way. We hope to continue raising money and keeping Tom’s light shining.”

The announcement of the funds raised was made on 31 August, the day that would have marked Tom’s 47th birthday.

“Tom’s story has touched many people across our communities and this generous donation is a wonderful tribute to his life. Gifts like this help us continue providing specialist care, emotional support and practical help to local people and their families at some of the most difficult times of their lives.”

As a local charity, St Nicholas Hospice Care relies heavily on the support of its community. Hospice care is free for patients and families, but it is not free to provide, with around 68p in every £1 needed to run the hospice coming from community support.

The Foundation is continuing its fundraising efforts, including plans for another Walk for Tom in 2027.
