St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Sunset Walk returns – sign up now for 2025

Following an incredible first year that saw 1,000 walkers raise a wonderful £123,186, St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Sunset Walk is back for its second year – and it promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Taking place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, this much-loved event, which is for the second time supported by main sponsor Greene King, will once again bring the community together for an evening of walking, music, and remembrance, all in support of the hospice’s vital work across West Suffolk and Thetford.

With 10km and 15km routes, both starting and finishing in the beautiful Abbey Gardens, Bury St Edmunds, walkers of all ages and abilities can take part. Whether you’re walking in memory of a loved one or simply want to show your support, every step helps those facing dying, death, and grief.

This year, the charity is encouraging supporters to sign up early and take advantage of the event’s early bird offer, which is running until April 24. You can sign up now and secure your place at a reduced rate of £13.50 for adults, £8 for children (aged 5-17), and all under-5s go free (all under-18s must be accompanied by an adult).

Charlie De-Moore, the hospice’s event manager, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the incredible support for last year’s Sunset Walk, with 1,000 walkers coming together to raise an amazing £123,186. It was a truly special evening, filled with remembrance, joy, and community spirit.

“We can’t wait to do it all again in 2025 – and we’d love even more people to join us. By signing up and raising funds, you’ll be making a real difference to those facing dying, death, and grief. So gather your friends, family, and colleagues, take advantage of our early bird offer, and let’s make this year’s Sunset Walk even better.”

The occasion, promises to be more than just a walk, with its festival atmosphere, those taking part are encouraged to arrive early, before the walk sets off at 6pm, to enjoy entertainment, delicious refreshments and a fund warm-up session, and, to capture the moment, there will also be a selfie station.

Graham Briggs, Social Lead at Greene King, said: “Following the amazing success of last year’s first Sunset Walk, we’re delighted to sponsor the event again this year. At Greene King, we’re passionate about supporting our local communities, especially here in our hometown of Bury St Edmunds.

“St Nic’s provides such incredible support to patients and their families through really tough times with so much care and respect, and it’s a cause that’s close to the hearts of so many people in the town.

“We hope to see even more people join in this year, putting on their trainers and help raise money for this amazing local cause.”

Along the route, music zones will keep the energy high, and there will also be quiet moments for reflection, where walkers can pause to remember those they are walking for.

It costs £22,000 a day to run St Nicholas Hospice Care, and with only a small amount of funding coming from statutory sources, events like the Sunset Walk are crucial in ensuring the charity can continue to provide its services. Every walker is asked to aim to raise at least £100, which will go towards helping the hospice support more local families when they need it most.
