Abbeycroft Leisure & HaverSports raises thousands

Abbeycroft Leisure and HaverSports are celebrating after their efforts raised £2,481 for our Hospice after a year which saw more than 600 people compete in sport events across West Suffolk.

The established leisure provider partnered with the aspiring events organising group HaverSports to deliver the third Haverhill Festival of Running in April, which included the town’s first marathon, a half marathon and 10 km runs in the town.

The Abbeycroft Leisure Triathlon Festivals were also held in Bury St Edmunds in June and again in Mildenhall in August, with successful inaugural events bringing both established athletes and novices into multisport.

Eight-year-old Isabel, from Bury, won her category in the junior aquathlons at the triathlon festivals in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, while her father Pip Moore finished second and her mother Helen Samuel was the first women to cross the finish line at the sprint triathlon in Mildenhall.

“It’s great to be able to compete locally and to see triathlon spreading across west Suffolk, particularly offering youngsters such as Isabel the opportunity to take part in the sport from an early age,” said Pip, 45.

I look forward to returning to compete in further HaverSports races in 2017.

Abbeycroft Leisure Health and Physical Activity Development Manager Matt Hickey said he hopes following on from this year’s success there will be the opportunity to offer even more events to the community.

“It’s been great to see such numbers taking part in multisport at our facilities, with athletes of all ages and abilities helping us to raise a fantastic sum for a very worthy cause,” said Matt.

Jack Tappin, HaverSports director, added: “It’s been a great year to grow and deliver more events, and our partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure has enabled us to realise this shared vision of seeing people competing in west Suffolk.

“I want to thank Abbeycroft Leisure and all our sponsors, and also all our marshals and wonderful athletes, and we look forward to contributing to triathlon being one of Britain’s fastest-growing sports with bigger and better events again next year.”
