Popular car show will welcome special fire engine

A fire engine fit for a queen will be among the fantastic array of vehicles going on show to raise funds for a local charity.

The popular Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake will return for the tenth time to Hall Farm Fornham St Martin, on Sunday, 1 September, and one of the vehicles set to be displayed has a royal connection.

The fire engine, which is being painstakingly restored by Tony Davey on behalf of its owners, was made in 1955 for use at Buckingham Palace.

One of only five specially produced, the engine, which has a short wheelbase, is currently undergoing a major refurbishment, to ensure it looks its best for the event.

Tony said: “There is still quite a bit of work to do on it. You can see where it has had the royal crest on it and Westminster Fire Brigade on there too.

“There’s the mud guards to go on and a reel hose ladder to go on. It’s been a couple of months work, but I have enjoyed it. We’re getting close to the show and it will be ready.”

Tony has completed the restoration work himself, only calling on a friend to help him with some of the woodwork needed when the engine’s frame was replaced.

The fire engine will join more than 650 vintage, pre-war, post-war, classic, modern and super cars as well as a varied selection of motorcycles and commercial vehicles, when it pulls up to Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake, which has raised more than £290,000 for St Nicholas Hospice Care.

George Chilvers, the hospice’s community fundraising manager, said: “Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake always attracts a wonderful mix of vehicles which really are the stars of the show.

“We are so grateful to our event hosts Andrew and Gina Long, and the committee behind the event for putting on such a great family day out.

“There is always plenty to see, please join us on Sunday, 1 September for what is shaping up to be the best event yet.”

Visitors to the event, which is sponsored for the third year running by Ashtons Legal and Ensors Chartered Accountants, will also be able to enjoy family-friendly entertainment, delicious food and refreshments.

Tickets for the show, which can be bought at the gate, cost £8 for adults and £5 for children.
Family tickets (two adults and two children) can also be purchased for £20. Visitors will be able to enjoy the show from 11am-4.30pm.
