Fun run and eating challenge raises thousands

A fun run and a menu full of not so tasty delicacies helped two friends and their supporters raise more than £2,000.

Gordon Ross and Nick Foulger were given a helping hand by their friends, families and supporters as they held their latest fundraising events in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

The events, which took place at Walsham-le-Willows Sports Club, resulted in £2,490 being raised.

The first event saw supporters pull on their running shoes and despite a heavy downpour complete the run’s 10km distance.

Gordon said: “I was one of those taking part in the run and it was hard, it wasn’t made any easier by the rain, but we did it.

“I did enjoy it; well I enjoyed the start and the end, but maybe not the middle. It is always rewarding doing it though.

“My wife was cared for by the Hospice, it is ten years since she passed away, but I will keep raising funds; we’re already planning for next year.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in the run and the sports club for their support. Special thanks must go to Paul Smith who initially came up with the idea for a fun run, Andrew Ross, Trevor and Gary Newman, Nigel Graham and Lee, Rachel and Phoebe Blackburn.”

Over the years, with support from Walsham-le-Willows Sports Club, the pair have organised and completed a number of charitable occasions, with the running total of funds raised currently standing at more than £12,000.

Rather than pulling on his trainers Nick decided to test his taste buds with a bushtucker trial style eating challenge.

Nick, whose father was also cared for by the Hospice, said: “I did marshal the run’s route but I decided running it wasn’t for me. Instead I volunteered to do an eating challenge and it was up to Gordon to find the stuff for me to eat.

“There were crickets, African mealworms, as well as pig’s eyes and locusts and to be honest I quite enjoyed it. I have done it before and to be honest I quite enjoy it.”
