Friends deal all the right moves to raise funds for local hospice

A group of friends are dealing all the right moves when it comes to fundraising for a local hospice.

The Bury Friends Group began fundraising for St Nicholas Hospice Care eight-years-ago and since then they have put their hand to organising regular events including the popular card playing afternoons, Bridge for Fun.
The groups’ ongoing dedication to fundraising has resulted in £34,220 for the hospice that supports people living with dying, death and grief in the West Suffolk and Thetford area.
Bridget Alexander, a member of Bury Friends Group, became involved in fundraising for the hospice in 2011.
She said “I was introduced to the hospice by Jane Rutherford who was vice chair of the trustee board at that time and sadly died unexpectedly in October 2012.
“I became a volunteer and met the head of fundraising on a training course. He asked me if I would like to organise fundraising events for the hospice which I have done so ever since in Jane’s memory.”
Bridget asked her friends if they would like to help her and since then they provided all the food for the Bury Friends Group events.
Miranda McCoy, community fundraiser, St Nicholas Hospice Care, said: “The Bridge for Fun” events having been running for a long time now and have proven to be really popular, with around 100 players attending.
“I am so grateful this is the case and would like to thank all the organisers, players and supporters of the Hospice for continuing to raise so much money for St Nics. It makes a huge difference to our work and allows us to continue supporting people at the end of their life and their loved ones. Thank you all so much”.
The next Bridge for Fun event, which includes a delicious afternoon tea, takes place at the New Green Centre, New Green Avenue, Thurston on Friday, 11 October, 2pm.
Singles are welcome to come along to the card playing afternoon with two sections, Friendly Duplicate Bridge and Social Friendly Bridge (Chicago). There are prizes for the winner of each section.
