Dr Pat Murrell returns with the latest in her series of popular lectures, Step Back in Time, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Bury’s Botanic Garden was the private creation of Nathaniel Shirley Harness Hodson. Sponsored by subscription, it was first sited east of the Great Churchyard and eventually moved into part of the Abbey Grounds (now Abbey Gardens) after outgrowing its original location.

Based on contemporary manuscript and printed sources, Pat Murrell shares her extensive unpublished research to tell how Hodson provided Bury St Edmunds with a fashionable horticultural venture at a time when plant-hunting, at home and abroad, was becoming all the rage.

This is a rare opportunity to hear a fascinating contemporary account of early eighteenth-century provincial life in Bury and beyond.

Tickets cost £10, including refreshments of cakes and biscuits made to recipes of the period.

This event takes place on Thursday, 23 October at 8pm (doors open at 7.30pm), at the United Reformed Church, Whiting Street, Bury St Edmunds.

Previous events have sold out, so advance booking is essential.
