Event volunteer opportunities

We are so grateful to all our supporters and event volunteers who take the time to volunteer at Hospice fundraising events throughout the year.

Here is a list of all the events coming up in 2019. If you would like to volunteer at any of these events, or require further information, please email fundraising@stnh.org.uk

Saturday 16 February – Market Stall, Bury
This is a permanent pitch every fourth Saturday that will be used predominantly to advertise and promote the lottery, raffles, etc. It will also be the regular presence of the Hospice at the market. Volunteers welcome to join for an hour or more throughout the day to assist and promote lottery and events.

Tuesday 26 February – Chinese New Year Spectacular Variety Show – The Apex
Help needed on the night. Bucket collection and general duties! Full information to follow.  

Saturday 20 April – Spring street collection – Bury St Edmunds
Bucket collectors required for an hour (or more) street collection in Bury Town Centre. Meeting at Oddfellows, Bury St. Edmunds. Hourly time slots will be from 10am to 3pm. Refreshments will be available for volunteers.

Sunday 14 April – Battle of the Knights lll, The Playground, Barrow
Packed with plenty of fun this is our challenge event that consists of a 4-kilometre run followed by 25 obstacles over an additional kilometer – 5K endurance. Saturday/Sunday 27/28 April – East Anglia Game and Country Fair, Euston Park
Euston Rural Pastimes need volunteers at the country fair to promote their event in June. An opportunity to enjoy the fair after your shift is done!  

Wednesday to Saturday 1, 2, 3, 4 May – Beer Festival at the Apex, Bury St Edmunds
An exciting new opportunity for us with various duties which include working in pairs/threes to serve drinks, admissions, glasses, rubbish collectors. There will be four time slots between 12 noon and 11pm.  We will need all hands on deck and as many volunteers as possible please!

Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Bank holiday Monday 3, 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 May – Tuddenham St Mary Art Exhibition
Volunteers required to sell raffle tickets and help at private viewing on 4 May. Thereafter hourly slots during the next two weekends to help with sales of artwork, refreshments and security. 

Sunday 12 May – Bury to Clare walk, Nowton Park – Clare Country Park
Organised by Kevin Marshall from Positive Steps Fitness. Annual Bury to Clare Run or Walk/Nordic Walking. Volunteers to help with registration at Nowton Park, marshal along the route and hand out medals at the finish line, in the grounds of Clare Country Park. Slots available throughout the day, if you wish to help at Nowton Park, it will be an early start! For further information visit: https://positivestepspt.co.uk/events/bury-to-clare-challenge-2

Saturday 18 May – Paws in the Park set up, Nowton Park
Volunteers required to set up the show, i.e. putting out fences, banners etc (will include moving and handling) timings to be confirmed! Most likely in the afternoon from 2pm onwards. Timings TBC.

Sunday 19 May – Paws in the Park, Nowton Park
Dog event held in partnership with Swayne & Partners. Volunteers to help at signing in entries for the classes (with help from Swaynes), car parking and entrance tent. This will be an all-day event, so we can split shifts and work round your preferences. 

Sunday 9 June – Euston Park Rural Pastimes – all day event
Volunteers required to process the entry of approx 7,000 visitors to the show and programme sellers. Very busy and great fun! Whoever joins us on the day will also be able to visit the many displays and activities throughout the day once their shift has been completed.

Saturday/Sunday 15/16 June 2018 – Suffolk Trail Running Festival
The Suffolk Trail Festival (TrailFest) is a unique opportunity to enjoy running in the beautiful Suffolk countryside between Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury.  There are four types of events – the 3k fun run, 10K trail race and the 12 or 24 hour race challenge! Volunteers will be needed throughout the weekend to assist with marshalling the runs for as little or as long a time as you can spare.

In addition! Sunday 16 June 1.30pm, new for St Nicholas Hospice Care, the one-mile ‘marathon’ running event for all. Donut and medal for all who cross the finishing line. Taking part never tasted so sweet. Volunteers needed to assist with this fun run, more information to follow.  

Sunday 16 June – Hidden Gardens, Bury St Edmunds
Volunteers required to process the donation and gift aid and collection of entry tickets from Angel Hill. A gazebo will be set up with tables in the morning. All volunteers will be given the opportunity to visit the gardens after their shift.  

Sunday 30 June – Pop up Golf Day, Santon Downham
Rotary Club at Brandon. Fun day requiring a Hospice representative and possibly a gazebo.

Please note that some of the dates from July onwards still need to be confirmed but a second list will be circulated at the end of June as per usual!

 Saturday/Sunday * July – Sudbury Open Gardens – date TBC
Volunteers to help with refreshments, and ticket sales. Time slots between 10am to 4pm. This event is organised by the Sudbury Rotary Club.

Sunday * July – The Edge, starting from Magila Rosso, Hawstead – date TBC
The Edge is a 30/60/100 mile bike ride that winds round the Suffolk countryside. Starting and finishing from Magila Rosso in Hawstead. Volunteer roles include helping at registration, being a route marshal, helping at water stops, present medals and greet at the finish line. 

Sunday 7 July – Women on Wheels Bury
For all those cycling enthusiasts – volunteer roles include either staffing the Hospice stall in Nowton Park or acting as roadside marshal.

Sunday 18 August – Girls Night Out T-shirt handout – Hospice
The handout session is really good fun, it’s a great way of engaging with the walkers taking part in September. Times are 10.30am to 2pm. There will be two shifts 10.30am to 12.15pm or 12.15pm to 2pm.

Thursday 22 August – Girls Night Out T-shirt handout – Bury Rugby Club
The handout session is really good fun, it’s a great way of engaging with the walkers taking part in September. Times are 5pm to 7pm

Sunday 1 September – Classic Cars by the Lake
Celebrating our 10th anniversary, Cars by the Lake is one of the biggest events in the St Nicholas Hospice Calendar and has raised over £250,000 in the last 9 years. Whoever joins us on the day will be able to visit the many displays and activities once their shift has been completed plus enjoy a complimentary burger and beverage. Volunteer roles include support at main entrance; selling raffle tickets and calendars, bucket collection from stall holders and marshals.  

Saturday 14 September – Girls Night Out
Last year’s event raised an incredible £235k! Girls Night Out is an 11.2 or six-mile circular walk round Bury St Edmunds, for women only, in PJs and wearing flashing bunny ears! Volunteers required to help as route marshals, handing out bunny ears, signing in, and an extra pair of hands! Event information can be found at: www.girlsnightoutwalk.co.uk

Saturday 26 October – Pumpkin Parade – Hospice
Pumpkin Parade returns! Our special event for young children and their families. A pumpkin themed parade around the hospice grounds. Volunteers required (dressed in their finest pumpkin themed attire if possible) to help along the route and with sign-in/registration. 

Saturday 7 December – Festive Forest Challenge, West Stow Country Park
Organised by Kevin Marshall from Positive Step Fitness. Annual Nordic Walking/ walking/ running event – all are encouraged to wear Christmas Jumpers! Volunteers to help at signing in participants at West Stow Country Park, marshal along the route, refreshment stops, and greet and present medal at finish line. 

Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 December – Santa’s Grotto
New for St Nic’s, join us for fun and festivities for all the little ones in the lead up to Christmas. Magical garden walk and craft activities, and of course visit Father Christmas in his grotto. More information to follow, assistance needed to run this over two days. 

Tuesday 17 December – Tesco superstore, Newmarket – date TBC
Final push darlings…bucket collectors required. Located in the foyer of the huge Tesco store in Newmarket – Christmas themed dress appreciated! We meet at the supermarket entrance. Hourly time slots will be from 9.30am to 4pm. Refreshments available.  

Saturday 21 December – Christmas Santa and Christmas pudding’s street collection
Meeting at the Oddfellows, Bury St. Edmunds. Hourly time slots will be from 10am to 3pm. Refreshments will be available for volunteers.
