Patient and Family Support Team (PFST) Volunteers support patients staying on our ward and their families.
We’re pleased to be able to share that six specially trained volunteers are now providing emotional support to patients and families on the Sylvan Ward.
Led by Sarah Price and Jennie Unitt, from our Patient and Family Support Team, the PFST volunteer initiative, which has been carefully redeveloped and relaunched, is designed to offer compassionate, skilled support to those facing some of life’s most challenging moments.
The volunteers are now a regular presence on the ward, offering a listening ear, companionship, and practical support. Whether it’s sitting with a patient for an hour painting their nails and reminiscing, or providing comfort to a family member, the volunteers are making a difference every day. The flexibility of the programme means volunteers can respond to the unique needs of each patient and family, spending time where it’s needed most.
Sarah explains: “It’s really exciting to see the PFST volunteer programme up and running. Our volunteers bring a wealth of experience and compassion, and their presence on the ward is already being felt by patients, families, and staff. It’s great to be able to offer this extra layer of support, and the volunteers are all very passionate about it.”
Before they started, the volunteers underwent a comprehensive training programme, including sessions on active listening, difficult conversations, memory-making, and complementary therapies. They also shadowed members of the PFST, which allowed them the gain a wide variety of perspectives.
As the initiative continues, ongoing reflective practice and monthly training will ensure that volunteers are continually supported and equipped to meet the needs of patients and families.
With the first three volunteers spending time on the ward from the week beginning Monday, 22 September, over the coming weeks the others will join them.
