Fundraisers step up as charity walk raises over £111,000 for local hospice

St Nicholas Hospice Care is delighted to announce that its flagship fundraising event, the Sunset Walk, has raised an outstanding £111,844.10 in support of its vital work across West Suffolk and Thetford.

The walk, kindly sponsored by Greene King, saw hundreds of participants come together in Bury St Edmunds on a warm summer’s evening to take on either 10K or 15K routes.

Walks started and finished in the Abbey Gardens, passing the charity’s hospice on Hardwick Lane, with energetic warm-ups, live performances, and touching moments of remembrance, the event’s atmosphere was uplifting

Charlie De-Moore, the hospice’s events manager, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to announce that this year’s Sunset Walk raised an incredible £111,844.10 for St Nicholas Hospice Care. Our thanks go to every single walker, volunteer, our sponsors Greene King, and all those who donated so generously, our performers and those businesses that supported us, your help truly makes a difference.

“The support from our community was incredible, and every step taken helped us move closer to our goal of ensuring no one faces dying, death, or grief alone. We’re already looking forward to welcoming everyone back when the walk returns next year. Please keep an eye out for the date in the coming months, we’d love you to walk with us in 2026.”

The funds raised by this event will help sustain the hospice’s work, which costs over £26,000 every day to run, and with only 36% of their income coming from statutory funding they face a daily shortfall of more than £18,000, which make fundraising events like the Sunset Walk essential.

The Sunset Walk will return in 2026, taking place on Saturday, 20 June, and the event will again be sponsored by Greene King.
