Key themes will help direct project

Another important step in the Listen Learn Adapt process was taken last week as staff gathered for work session two – an important milestone and a chance to reflect on the ideas, views and experiences gained so far.
What happened?

During work session two staff were asked to consider what the key focuses of the Listen Learn Adapt service re-design process should be moving forward. To do this attendees looked at seven key themes which emerged from the patient journeys those attending work session one mapped out.

The key themes were:
  • Continuity of care
  • Sustainability and feasibility
  • Access and choice
  • Promoting independence and resilience
  • Holistic care: practical, medical and psychological
  • Scalability
  • An experience that is as dignified, pain free and peaceful (as it can be)

Working in groups everyone was asked to think the challenges and opportunities associated with each before considering them from the points of view of:

  • A service user
  • Business
  • The organisation

For example when considering continuity of care:

How would a service user feel if this could not be guaranteed, would they be upset by an inconsistent service, could they become fearful or anxious?

As a business – would there be grants for one off work that could help develop services, the costs associated with developing new services and what would happen if the charity continued to use its reserves to fill funding gaps.

As an organisation –challenges could be being clearer about what the Hospice offers or having enough resource and capacity to deliver continuity of care.

The three key themes that were chosen to be taken forward were:

  • Promoting independence and resilience
  • Holistic care: practical, medical and psychological
  • Sustainability and feasibility.

These themes will now be used to form the discussion guides which will help inform the project as we move towards the fieldwork element, which will see our staff and volunteers discussing life-limiting illnesses, death, dying and bereavement with the public.

What happens next?

The three key themes will now help to model the service design process. Having been identified as areas to focus on they will be explored in the fieldwork stage of the process as we continue to gather stories regarding death, dying and bereavement throughout interviews which will start shortly.

The other themes will not be forgotten, and will be explored at later stages of the Listen Learn Adapt process, but to achieve what we need to with this phase one of this re-design work areas of focus were needed.

Making sure the model of care taken forward will be sustainable and feasible will be helped by the fact that all service ideas will be explored fully, costed and piloted before being implemented.
