Walkers pace the pavements to raise a wonderful £95,000

St Nicholas Hospice Care is celebrating after its Sunset Walk raised an incredible £95,000 to support local people and families facing dying, death and grief. 

A total of 850 walkers took to the streets of Bury St Edmunds for the event, following scenic 10K and 15K routes through the town.

Friends, families, colleagues and community groups walked side by side, with many taking part in memory of someone special or to say thank you for the care and support they had experienced.

With the final funds now counted, the hospice is delighted to confirm that 2026’s event, which took place on June 20, and was sponsored by headline sponsor Greene King, has raised £95,000.

Graham Briggs, Social Lead at Greene King, said: “The Sunset Walk has become a really special event for Bury St Edmunds, bringing together people of all ages for a cause that touches so many lives.

“We’re incredibly proud to have supported the walk for a third year and to see £95,000 raised for St Nicholas Hospice Care. These funds will help the hospice continue providing compassionate care and support for patients and their families when they need it most.”

The money will help St Nicholas Hospice Care continue providing specialist palliative care and support for people across West Suffolk and Thetford. As a local charity, the Hospice relies heavily on fundraising and the generosity of its community to continue its work.

It is an incredible total and a real reflection of the generosity and commitment of everyone who took part, volunteered, donated or supported the event.

“Every walker had their own reason for joining us, whether they were remembering someone special, saying thank you for the care their family had received or simply wanting to support their local hospice. Together, they have made a huge difference.

“We are so grateful to everyone who helped make the evening possible, including our volunteers and our headline sponsor Greene King. Thank you to every person who walked, fundraised and supported us.”

The event village in Abbey Gardens welcomed participants with music and activities before the walk began.

Along the routes, supporters and volunteers encouraged walkers, while the Hospice’s Hardwick Lane site provided a quieter opportunity for people to pause and remember those close to them.

Walkers were welcomed back to the finish with refreshments and medals in recognition of their achievement. The event was supported by many volunteers who helped it run smoothly.
