When Jane and Tony Cochrane moved to 87 Guildhall Street their garden was a concrete car park separated from a paved courtyard by an 8-foot drop.

Over two years, they designed the garden, coordinated the demolition and building work, imported the soil, plants and trees to recreate the walled garden that might once have stood in the medieval grid of Bury St Edmunds.

Their aims were to create a practical, fragrant space with drought-resistant planting, special thought to birds and insects and the views of many neighbours that overlook their inner town space.
